CARBONDALE, Ill. - Northern Iowa posted five players in double figure kills including 15 each from middle blockers Danielle Brazda and Trista Humpal as the Panthers went on to defeat Southern Illinois 3-1 in Missouri Valley Conference play Saturday in Davies Gym.
UNI tallied 15 more kills and 15 more assists than SIU, out hitting the Salukis .225 to .177. Ball handling errors seemed to plague Southern at crucial times, allowing UNI eight ace serves.
"It was very disappointing," Saluki head coach Brenda Winkeler said. "We'd call a time out and then we'd make a couple of mental errors, whether it be serving or serve receive. That happens, it's not something you want to happen. Against good teams mental errors happen and UNI is a very good team, always on top of the conference."
Johannah Yutzy and Katy DeWulf led the Salukis with 11 kills apiece, each adding three blocks along with nine digs from Yutzy. Kristy Elswick led the defense with 21 digs, while Haley Hann posted 15 digs along with seven kills.
Setter Holly Marita posted a double-double with 39 assists, 14 digs and five kills.
"It was encouraging to see us go out and get that third game after being down two," Winkeler added. "I encourage them to always go after it and not be afraid of failing and they do that. We should play every team like they are the best team in the conference."
The loss brings Southern's record to 7-13 on the season and 4-7 in conference play, while UNI sits at 14-8, 8-3 in the MVC, taking the 26th straight match up between the two teams.
Southern hits the road to face non-conference opponent SEMO Tuesday before heading back into Valley play Oct. 28-29 against Indiana State and Illinois State. The Salukis handled the Sycamores in their first meeting of the season, but fell to the Redbirds, 3-0.
