CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Marissa Washington recorded a career-high 19 kills and only one error, hitting .600, to lead Southern Illinois past Southeast Missouri State, 3-2, Tuesday night in the Houck Fieldhouse.
SEMO (11-13, 7-3 OVC) won the first game of the match 30-23, but SIU (8-13, 4-7 MVC) bounced back to win two and three, 30-28, 30-22. The Redhawks answered in game four, 30-19, but couldn't hold on as the Salukis took game five, 15-12.
The Salukis picked up a season-best 11.5 total team blocks, including 17 block assists and three solos. Southern hit .320 on the night, three hitters over .400.
Along with Washington, fellow middle blocker Johannah Yutzy hit .542 with 14 kills, adding four digs and four blocks. Outside hitter Katy DeWulf added 11 kills and only one error, boasting a .417 average on the night.
Setter Holly Marita and right side Haley Hann each picked up a double-double. Marita with 53 assists, 18 digs and Hann with 11 kills, 15 digs.
Defensively the Salukis were led by freshmen Kristy Elswick and Kristie Berwanger. Elswick posting 23 digs and Berwanger, a career-high six blocks.
The Salukis return to Missouri Valley Conference action this weekend when they hit the road to take on Indiana State Friday and Illinois State Saturday, both games a 7 p.m.
