Volleyball loses to Missouri State, 3-1

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Missouri State posted three hitters in double-digit kills, hitting .256 on the night to defeat Southern Illinois, 3-1, in Missouri Valley Conference volleyball action Saturday night in Davies Gym.
The Salukis (9-16, 5-10) won the first game of the match, 30-25, but could not coral the Bears' (18-8, 11-3) offense that posted nearly 20 more kills than SIU, as MSU swept the final three games, 30-19, 30-23, 30-19.
Saluki senior Marissa Washington recorded nine kills and five block assists in her final home match in Davies. Her block assist mark brought her career tally to 238, ninth all-time at SIU.
The Bears eighth-ranked defense in the nation posted 78 digs, 16 more than the Salukis.
Johannah Yutzy led SIU with 14 kills, hitting .333 on the night. The junior middle blocker also added seven digs and three blocks, including one solo. Katy DeWulf chipped in 12 kills, five digs and two blocks, while Kristie Berwanger added nine kills and two blocks.
The Salukis were without right side hitter Haley Hann, who checked out shortly into game one with a muscle spasm.
The bright spot on the night came from Southern's serving, as they tied a season-best 14 service aces, including a career-high five each from DeWulf and Kristy Elswick, who also posted 20 digs on the night. Setter Holly Marita added four aces and 43 assists in the match.
Elswick brought her dig total this season to 424, 38 digs away from the third-best single-season mark in SIU history.
The Salukis are on the road for the final three games of the regular season, currently in seventh place in the Valley, on the bubble to qualify for the MVC tournament. Next weekend they travel to Nebraska and Iowa to face Creighton and Drake.
