Swimmers compete at U.S. Open: Day 3

AUBURN, Ala. - Four members of the Southern Illinois University swimming team qualified for the finals in their respective events Saturday in the final day of competition at the U.S. Open.
A number of U.S. Olympic swimmers and high-profile international stars competed during the three-day competition that began Thursday morning with the first wave of events and is completed Saturday night with the final set of events.
The meet was held at Auburn University's James E. Martin Aquatics Center in Auburn, Ala.
Freshman Dennis Hedo had the top finish among the SIU swimmers as he came in seventh (15th overall) in the B Final in the 100-Meter Freestyle with a time of 52.37.
He qualified for the final after coming in 15th in the preliminary with a time of 52.32.
Sophomore Stephan Ackerman also tried to qualify in the 100-Meter Freestyle, but came up short, finishing 46th in the preliminary with a time of 54.08.
Christian Tinajero qualified for his second event at the U.S. Open when he finished 18th in the preliminary for the 200-Meter Breaststroke preliminary with a time of 2:28.18.
Tinajero finished second in the C Final (18th overall) with a time of 2:26.57.
Sophomore Antonio Santoro qualified for his third event after taking 21st in the 200-Meter Butterfly preliminary with a time of 2:08.10. He went on to finish eighth in the C Final (24th overall) with a time of 2:08.64.
Rounding out the SIU effort was senior Jason Sigler. Sigler came in 23rd in the 1500-Meter Freestyle with a time of 16:28.34.

The Saluki swimming & diving teams return to action Jan. 21, 2006 with a dual meet against Missouri Valley Conference foe Missouri State in Springfield, Mo.
