CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University Associate Athletic Director Kathy Jones was one of nine new members recently appointed to the NCAA Division I Management Council.
Jones will serve a four-year term representing the Missouri Valley Conference on the 49-member Council comprised of athletics administrators and faculty athletics representatives.
"It's an honor to be named to the Council and representing the MVC," said Jones. "My predecessor on the Council, Darlene Bailey from Southwest Missouri State, did a great job of keeping the MVC athletic administrators, faculty athletics representatives and presidents informed."
"I look forward to maintaining her high standards of communication and collaboration in terms of helping develop the league's legislative position."
Jones is in her sixth year as associate athletic director at SIU, where she supervises the Olympic sports programs and oversees the units in the athletics department responsible for monitoring student-athlete welfare.
She also oversees compliance and the student services areas, including academic counseling, the athletic training room and the strength and conditioning program.
Prior to SIU, Jones spent 10 years as an attorney whose practice focused on NCAA compliance and infraction matters. She served three years as ex officio legal counsel to the board of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA).
The new opportunity also enables Jones to play a role in a governance structure again.
"Governance is something I've loved being involved with since my days as an undergraduate and graduate student," stated Jones. "I'm excited to be back in it."
The NCAA Management Council consists of three representatives each from the ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Conference-USA, Pac-10 and SEC; one representative each from the Sun Belt, Mid-American, Mountain West and Western Athletic Conferences; and one representative each from the other Division I Conferences.
The Council reports to the Board of Directors, and duties of the Council include adopting operating bylaws and rules ratified by the Board, making recommendations to the Board, approving interpretations of legislation, reviewing recommendations from the cabinets and committees, identifying trends and evaluating problems.
The Council also oversees NCAA Division I cabinets responsible for academic affairs, eligibility and compliance, and championships and competition.
