CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University Swimming & Diving coach Rick Walker was honored with the Glenn S. Hummer Award at the USA Swimming House of Delegates meeting Friday, Sept. 16 in Greensboro, N.C.
Walker, along with his staff, were honored for their work with the Open Water World Championship team this past summer in Montreal, Quebec.
Walker coached the team to a fourth-place finish, finishing one point out of trophy contention. It was the highest finish for a U.S. National Open Water Team since 2001.
"This is the second time that I have received the award and this time it is in recognition for the work and efforts we did leading up to the world championships," said Walker.
"This was one of the biggest honors because it was a whole group of people working toward a common place, a common direction and that is always a lot of fun."
The award was established in 1978 and named after Hummer, who was an Olympian and coach. It is given annually to the person or group making the greatest contribution to long-distance swimming.
