MACOMB, Ill. - Middle blocker Johannah Yutzy led all hitters with 14 kills, 10 digs as the Southern Illinois volleyball team went on to sweep Western Illinois, 3-0, Sunday afternoon in the Westerwinds' Western Hall.
The Salukis (4-8, 1-2) took the final match of a three-game road trip, 30-21, 30-21, 31-29.
"I thought we played well considering we've been on the road for a long time," Saluki head coach Brenda Winkeler said. "We didn't have a lot of bad runs today and that's what we are trying to minimize. Overall we played pretty solid, except for the third game."
SIU hit only .133 in the final game of the match, hitting .269 overall. The Saluki defense dominated, placing three athletes in double-digit digs, including 21 from freshman libero Kristy Elswick. SIU also held the Westerwinds to .178 at the net.
Katy DeWulf added a career-high 13 kills and two service aces, while Jene' Pulliam tallied nine kills, and 10 digs. Setter Holly Marita recorded 48 assists and three digs in the win.
"Jo played very well with a double-double and Elswick did a solid job on defense," Winkeler added. "DeWulf also played one of her best games of the season with 13 kills and only three errors."
The Salukis will come back to Carbondale for SIU's homecoming weekend, when they take on Missouri Valley Conference opponents Illinois State and Indiana State. SIU will take on the Redbirds Friday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. before facing the Sycamores Saturday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. in Davies Gym.
