CARBONDALE, Ill. - Three Redbirds posted double-digit kills and the team recorded 84 digs in the three-game match, as Illinois State swept Southern Illinois (30-27, 30-25, 30-28) Friday night in Davies Gym.
The Salukis (4-9, 1-3) forced the Redbirds (7-6, 3-2) to come back from a seven-point deficit in games two and three as Illinois State's defense overran the Saluki offense posting 17 block assists to go with their school-record dig tally.
Johannah Yutzy led SIU with 10 kills and five digs, while Marissa Washington hit a match-high .375 with seven kills and only one error in 16 attempts. The middle blockers also added two block solos and three block assists.
Jene' Pulliam added eight kills, five digs and two service aces, as setter Holly Marita led the Saluki defense, tying a career-high 20 digs and tallying 32 assists. Haley Hann and Kristy Elswick recorded 15 and 18 digs respectively, each adding two service aces.
Both teams hit .190, but the Illinois State defense was too much, posting four Redbirds in double-digit digs, including a match-high 23 from Redbird libero Ashley Grubb.
The Salukis face Indiana State Saturday at 7 p.m. in Davies Gym to wrap up conference play on Southern's homecoming weekend. The Sycamores (0-15, 0-5) bring a sixteen game losing streak from last season into Saturday's conference match up.
