Northwestern TYR Invitational: Day 1 Preliminaries

EVANSTON, Ill. - In Friday morning preliminaries in this week's Northwestern TYR Invitational, the Southern Illinois University swimming & diving teams qualified 29 Salukis for tonight's finals.
Events for the first day of competition include the 500 Free, 200 IM, 50 Free and 1-Meter Diving.
The format of the Northwestern TYR Invitational includes three different finals. The top four swimmers from the preliminaries will advance to the Super Finals where competitors will earn 25, 21, 19 or 17 points. The next final is the Consolation Final, which will include those who placed fifth through 12th in the preliminaries. Those swimmers will earn 14, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7 or 6 points.
Lastly, those who place 13th through 20th in the preliminaries will advance to the Bonus Final. The top four swimmers in the Bonus Final will receive 4, 3, 2 or 1 points.
In the first day of preliminaries, SIU advanced seven swimmers to the Super Final, eight to the Consolation Final and nine to the Bonus Final.
For the women, freshman Lisa Jaquez led the team in the 500 Free, finishing 10th overall with a time of 5:09.71 to qualify for the Championship Final. Fellow freshmen Keli Kramer (14th, 5:13.27) and Kasey Fernandez (19th, 5:22.07) qualified for the Bonus Final.
In the 200 IM, sophomore Danielle Quarry became the first Saluki to qualify for a Super Final as she finished third with a time of 2:09.29. Senior Nora Bunford (6th, 2:09.42) and junior Abby Blank (10th, 2:11.73) qualified for the Championship Final while sophomore Kelly Dvorak (13th, 2:12.16) and her freshman sister Samantha Dvorak (16th, 2:13.59) qualified for the Bonus Final.
Kelly Dvorak initially tied for 12th in the preliminary but lost in a swim-off, settling for 13th.
Junior Julie Ju posted the women's best finish in the preliminaries as she came in second in the 50 Free with a time of 23.86 to qualify for the Super Final. Sophomore Isabel Madeira (5th, 24.11) and freshman Therese Mattsson (7th, 24.29) qualified for the Championship Final as freshman Tovah Gasparovich (14th, 25.00) qualified for the Bonus Final.
Madeira fell into a similar situation as Dvorak as she placed in a tie for fourth initially, but lost in a swim-off to take fifth.
In the women's 1-Meter Diving, senior Cristina Curtuneanu finished first overall with a score of 252.30. Freshmen Emily Gable (8th, 187.50) and Nicole Macvey (9th, 172.50) followed behind her.
For the men, junior Antonio Santoro got things going right away as she placed third in the 500 Free with a time of 4:27.92 to qualify for the Super Final. Sophomore Vinicius Waked followed right behind Santoro in fourth place, also qualifying for the Super Final, with a time of 4:29.20.
Sophomores Ivan Zgomba (16th, 4:44.08) and Ray Sophie (19th, 4:48.52) both qualified for the Bonus Final.
In the 200 IM, junior Gareth McGee finished second overall, qualifying for the Super Final, with a time of 1:53.73. Freshman Tim Silkaitis (5th, 1:54.54) and sophomore Alexandre Marrucho (6th, 1:54.76) qualified for the Championship Final while freshman Jameson Kuper (14th, 1:58.25) finished high enough for the Bonus Final.
In the 50 Free, SIU again qualified two for the Super Final as Stephan Ackermann finished second with a time of 20.64, followed by Dennis Hedo with a time of 20.70.
Patrick Sullivan finished eighth overall with a time of 21.49, good enough for the Championship Final as senior Case Gasparovich finished 13th, qualifying for the Bonus Final, with a time of 21.84.
In men's 1-Meter Diving, senior Andrew Flor finished fifth with a score of 240.65 while freshman Kyle Carevic finished seventh with a score of 203.65.
Finals for Friday's events is set to begin at 5 p.m. in Northwestern's Norris Aquatic Center.
