Northwestern TYR Invitational: Day 2 Preliminaries

EVANSTON, Ill. - In Saturday morning preliminaries in this week's Northwestern TYR Invitational, the Southern Illinois University swimming & diving teams qualified 41 Salukis for tonight's finals.
Events for the second day of competition include the 400 IM, 100 Fly, 200 Free, 100 Breast, 100 Back and 3-Meter Diving.
The format of the Northwestern TYR Invitational includes three different finals. The top four swimmers from the preliminaries will advance to the Super Finals where competitors will earn 25, 21, 19 or 17 points. The next final is the Consolation Final, which will include those who placed fifth through 12th in the preliminaries. Those swimmers will earn 14, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7 or 6 points.
Lastly, those who place 13th through 20th in the preliminaries will advance to the Bonus Final. The top four swimmers in the Bonus Final will receive 4, 3, 2 or 1 points.
In the second day of preliminaries, SIU advanced 12 swimmers to the Super Final, 14 to the Consolation Final and 10 to the Bonus Final.
For the women, Nora Bunford got things going right away as she qualified for the Super Final in the 400 IM by finishing third with a time of 4:34.26. Danielle Quarry (5th, 4:35.70), Abby Blank (8th, 4:40.07) and Lisa Jaquez (9th, 4:42.43) all qualified for the Championship Final while Keli Kramer (15th, 4:47.79) and Jenna Helm (17th, 4:57.60) qualified for the Bonus Final.
In the 100 Fly, Samantha Dvorak (5th, 59.31), Gabriela Flores (6th, 59.51), Abby Blank (10th, 1:00.24) and Kasey Fernandez (11th, 1:00.56) all qualified for the Championship Final. Rachel Winius qualified for the Bonus Final, finishing 14th with a time of 1:00.75.
Therese Mattsson qualified for the Super Final in the 200 Free, finishing fourth with a time of 1:522.80. Isabel Madeira (7th, 1:54.99) and Kelly Dvorak (10th, 1:56.11) each qualified for the Championship Final while Jaquez (14th, 1:57.06) and Tovah Gasparovich (18th, 1:58.43) qualified for the Bonus Final.
SIU came out strong in the 100 Breast as Julie Ju won the preliminary with a time of 1:04.67. Bunford also qualified for the Super Final, finishing third overall with a time of 1:05.54.
In the morning's final swimming event, Kelly Dvorak qualified for the Super Final as she finished second with a time of 57.67. Quarry qualified for the Championship Final as she finished seventh with a time of 1:00.37. Samantha Dvorak (13th, 1:01.25) and Liz Navitsky (15th, 1:01.64) both qualified for the Bonus Final.
In women's 3-Meter Diving, Cristina Curtuneanu finished third with a score of 262.65 and was followed by Emily Gable at fourth with a score of 248.30. Nicole Macvey finished eighth with a score of 160.40.
In men's events, Gareth McGee got things going right away as he finished third in the 400 IM with a time of 4:06.38 to qualify for the Super Final.
Stephan Ackermann followed up with the men's team's first preliminary victory as he finished first in the 100 Fly with a time of 48.52. Ivan Zgomba qualified for the Championship Final, finishing eighth with a time of 51.63, and Ray Sophie picked up the final spot in the Bonus Final, finishing 20th with a time of 54.84.
Vinicius Waked followed up Ackermann's win with one of his own as he took top honors in the 200 Free with a time of 1:37.90. But, the most amazing thing of the event was that he was followed at second and third places by Salukis. Dennis Hedo finished second with a time of 1:38.55 and Antonio Santoro finished third with a time of 1:38.94, placing all three swimmers in the Super Final.
Ackermann finished 15th in the 200 Free with a time of 1:44.26, qualifying for the Bonus Final.
Freshmen Jameson Kuper (7th, 59.78) and Christopher Gaffney (10th, 1:01.07) both qualified for the Championship Final in the 100 Breast. Case Gasparovich qualified for the Bonus Final, finishing 14th with a time of 1:03.38.
In the 100 Back, Alexandre Marrucho qualified for the Super Final as he finished second with a time of 50.89. Tim Silkaitis also qualified for the Super Final, finishing fourth with a time of 51.62. McGee rounded out the morning's final swimming competition for SIU, qualifying for the Championship Final with a time of 51.85 and a fifth-place finish.
In men's 3-Meter Diving, Andrew Flor finished fifth with a score of 238.30 and Kyle Carevic finished seventh with a score of 204.65.
Finals for Saturday's events is set to begin at 5 p.m. in Northwestern's Norris Aquatic Center.
