CARBONDALE, Ill. - In the Thursday morning preliminaries in this week's Missouri Valley Conference Swimming & Diving Championships, 20 Salukis advanced to tonight's finals.
In the women's 500 Free, Elizabeth McGowan finished second with a time of 5:05.02, a season-best for the senior from Ft. Worth Texas. McGowan finished second in the preliminaries, coming in behind Missouri State's Liz Geisler who finished with a time of 4:59.99.
Also qualifying in the 500 Free was Katie Lowry, who finished fifth with a time of 5:11.02.
In the men's 500 Free, SIU's Antonio Santoro set a MVC Invitational record, winning the preliminary with a time of 4:25.26. He bests the mark set by former Saluki Ivan Sanchez (4:29.14) in 2004.
Also qualifying for the men in the 500 Free were Vinicius Waked (4:32.43) and Jason Sigler (4:36.06).
The women's 200 IM saw three Salukis qualify in the A Final. MSU's Andi Rojas took the top time in the preliminary with a time of 2:08.62, followed by SIU's Danielle Quarry with a time of 2:09.09, a career-best time for the freshman from Colorado Springs, Colo.
Kelly Dvorak (2:11.62) and Abby Blank (2:11.78) also qualified in the A Final, both times are also season-bests.
In the B Final, two more Salukis swam fast enough to earn their way in. Nora Bunford finished ninth in the preliminary with a time of 2:12.04. She was followed by Rachel Winius with a time of 2:13.47.
In the men's 200 IM, MSU's Matt Beasley took top honors with a time of 1:50.24. He was followed by SIU's Gareth McGee, finishing second in the preliminary with a time of 1:52.31.
Southern Illinois' Christian Tinajero also qualified for the A Final with a time of 1:55.05.
SIU's Alexandre Marrucho (1:56.01), Miguel King (1:56.89) qualified for the B Final.
In the morning's final swimming preliminary, SIU's Julie Ju took the top position with a time of 23.87.
Freshman Isabel Madeira also qualified for the A Final, coming in fourth with a time of 24.30.
Kelsey Kinsella qualified for the Salukis in the B Final, finishing ninth with a time of 24.84.
In the men's 50 Free, sophomore Stephan Ackerman came in first with a time of 20.68. Southern Illinois' Dennis Hedo and Bryan Riekena qualified for the final with times of 20.86 and 20.87, respectively.
DIVING PRELIMINARIES
In the men's 1-Meter preliminary, Missouri State's Ryan Maeker took the top spot with a score of 246.10. SIU's Brandon Birchak missed Maeker by five hundredths of a point, finishing with 246.05.
SIU went on to take the next three places with Ben Palacios coming in third (241.95), Andrew Flor at fourth (241.65) and T.J. Rietveld at fifth (236.60).
In the women's 1-Meter preliminary, SIU took the top two spots with Cristina Curtuneanu taking first with a score of 240.40. Freshman Jessica Leong followed with a score of 229.05.
Senior Melissa Hanson also finished in the top 10, scoring 181.05.
