Swimming & Diving defeats Evansville in season-opener

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - In its first meet of the season, the Southern Illinois University Swimming & Diving teams came out with a dominating performance Saturday over conference rival Evansville. The men's team won 158-81 while the women won 157-75.
SIU dominated every aspect of the meet as a Saluki was the individual champion in each of the 26 events.
"I thought we swam very well today for it being our first meet of the season," said SIU head coach Rick Walker. "Not all of our times are where we want them to be but that will come shortly."
For the women, it was freshman Therese Mattsson leading the way. She won the 50 Freestyle (24.64) and the 100 Freestyle (52.48), while also swimming as part of the 200 Freestyle Relay team.
Isabel Madeira, Danielle Quarry, Kelly Dvorak, Julie Ju and Nora Bunford followed up with two titles apiece.
Madeira won the 200 Freestyle (1:53.94), Quarry won the 200 Individual Medley (2:11.50) and Ju won the 500 Freestyle (5:02.40). All three were part of the 200 Freestyle Relay team.
Dvorak won the 100 Backstroke (1:00.63) as Bunford won the 100 Breast (1:08.22). Both were part of the 200 Medley Relay team, along with Gabriela Flores and Tovah Gasparovich.
Rounding out the swimming events were Kelli Kramer winning the 1000 Freestyle (10:41.72) and Abby Blank winning the 100 Butterfly (1:00.15).
In women's diving, it was Cristina Curtuneanu winning in the 1-Meter (250.45) while Emily Gable won on the 3-Meter (231.80).
For the men's team, it was Antonio Santoro, Vinicius Waked and Gareth McGee leading the way with three titles each.
Santoro won the 1000 Freestyle (9:36.76) and 100 Butterfly (51.96). He was also part of the winning 200 Medley Relay team with Case Gasparovich, Tim Silkaitis and Christopher Gaffney.
Waked won the 200 Freestyle (1:40.83) and 500 Freestyle (4:37.78) while McGee won the 200 Individual Medley (1:54.97) and the 100 Backstroke (51.80). Both were members of the winning 200 Free Relay team with Gasparovich and Stephan Ackerman.
Rounding out the swimming events were Ackerman winning the 50 Freestyle (21.61) as Dennis Hedo won the 100 Freestyle (46.67) and 100 Breast (58.38).
In the diving events, it was Kyle Carevic (235.00) winning the 1-Meter while Andrew Flor won the 3-Meter (232.10).
The Salukis now take about a three-week break before returning to action Oct. 21 with a dual meet against Drury in Springfield, Mo.
