CARBONDALE, Ill. - Tiffany Gowens has been named as an assistant swimming and diving coach, announced head coach Rick Walker.
Gowens comes to Southern Illinois from Jacksonville, Fla. where she served as the Operations Coordinator for Velocity Sports Performance. While working in Jacksonville, Gowens served as the assistant coach for children ages eight-10 for the Bolles School swim team.
She was a four-year letterman in swimming at Texas A&M from 2001-2005. During her time at A&M, Gowens won two Big 12 championships and broke a school record in the 400-meter freestyle. She was also named an NCAA All-American while with the Aggies.
"Tiffany brings to our program a full slate of talents," said Walker. "She had a proven athletic career at my alma mater Texas A&M. She was an All-American and Big 12 Conference Champ. She also has a proven coaching record having coached at The Bolles School with some of the top-level age group swimmers in the country."
Gowens earned her bachelor of science in kinesiology degree with a focus on sport management and a minor in business in 2005.
Her responsibilities at SIU will include assisting with recruiting, coaching and day-to-day office work and mentoring athletes both in and out of the pool.
"The enthusiasm and energy she brings will only foster a better atmosphere around us and promote continual success of our program," said Walker. "We had a great pool of candidates but Tiffany just stood out and brings to us everything we need."
