EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Southern Illinois volleyball team had the tables turned against them Thursday night. After sweeping Evansville nearly a month ago at home, the Purple Aces (11-10, 4-6 MVC) did some sweeping of their own, taking three straight from the Salukis (12-10, 4-6 MVC), 30-19, 30-25, 30-27, at the Carson Center.
The Salukis find themselves in a familiar position, tied with the Purple Aces for sixth-place in the Missouri Valley Conference. Last season, UE beat out the SIU for the final position in The Valley tournament.
SIU hit .096 in the match, out-blocked by UE 10 to eight.
Marina Medic led the Salukis with 11 kills and five block assists, while Kelsie Laughlin added 10 kills, six digs and three block assists. Setter Brooklyn Robbins recorded 33 assist and seven digs, while freshman Jasmine Conner matched Medic with five block assists.
Jennifer Berwanger recorded a team-high 17 digs. Kari Buehlhorn and Kristy Elswick chipped in 13 and 11 digs respectively.
The Aces were led by Sally Kulupka with 12 kills, Danielle Diehl added six kills, two solo and five block assists and libero Julie Walroth recorded a match-high 26 digs.
The Evansville match-up was the Southern's fourth-straight road match. The Salukis return home next weekend to face Wichita State Friday at 7 p.m. in Davies Gym. Saturday, SIU will host Missouri State, also at 7 p.m.
