Volleyball falls to Wichita State in four

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois volleyball team ended a 16-game win streak for Wichita State, opening the four-game match with a 30-24 victory over one of the top-ranked teams in the Missouri Valley Conference, but couldn't close the door, as the Shockers fought back to win three straight, 30-20, 30-18, 30-25, and maintain their tie for first in The Valley with Missouri State Friday night in Davies Gym.
After hitting .140 in game one, Wichita State (20-4, 11-1 MVC) bounced back to hit .315 in the match,
SIU shocked the visitors in game one, hitting .340, led by Jennifer Berwanger and Chandra Roberson, who combined for 12 kills on 19 attempts with zero errors.
Southern out-blocked Wichita in game one, 5.0 to 1.0, finishing the match with 11.0 team blocks to the Shockers' 10.0, making it the 17th match this season the Salukis have led defensively at the net.
Berwanger led Southern with a career-high, match-high and team-high this season at 21 kills. The redshirt freshman added nine digs and two service aces for the Salukis. Roberson finished with 13 kills, one solo and five block assists.
Junior right side hitter Kristie Berwanger returned to the Saluki lineup after six matches off due to illness. The junior recorded nine kills and tied a team-high 14 digs, adding one solo and four block assists.
Brooklyn Robbins recorded the Salukis' lone double-double with 50 assists, 14 digs and three block assists.
The Shockers put three players in double-digit kills, led by Sara Lungren with 16 kills, 13 digs for Wichita State. Stephanie Tokarz and Emily Stockman pitched in 15 and 14 kills respectively, while setter Abby Harsh recorded a match-high 57 assists.
Southern will host the other league-leading team Missouri State Saturday night in Davies Gym at 7 p.m. Fans are encouraged to dress in Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness and "Dig for the Cure."
