Swimming dominates Evansville in season opener

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Southern Illinois University swimming teams opened the 2007-08 season this weekend with a dominating performance at Evansville on Saturday.
The men's team swept every event they swam, while the women won all but one event.
In the first event of the day, the 200-yard medley relay, the women took the top two spots. The team of Julie Ju, Samantha Dvorak, Kasey Fernandez and Isabel Madeira won the event with a time of 1:52.00. The men also took the top two spots in the event, with Tim Silkaitis, Dennis Hedo, Antonio Santoro and Kyle Riekena posting a time of 1:36.83.
Finishing second on the women's side were Kelly Dvorak, Keli Kramer, Emily Duerringer and Tovah Gasparovich (1:53.84). On the men's side, Gareth McGee, Jameson Kuper, Stephan Ackerman and Pat Sullivan (1:36.83) finished second in the race.
Kramer won the women's 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:03.88 and Zach Harris finished first on the men's side with a time of 10:00.93. Finishing second for the women was Karin Mullendore with a time of 11:11.86. Colton Kleynhans took second for the men with a time of 10:00.94.
Therese Mattsson won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:53.09 on the women's side while Santoro won the men's side with a 1:43.77 mark. Madeira (1:54.00) took second for the women and Ivan Zgomba (1:50.31) finished second for the men.
In the 100-yard backstroke, Kelly Dvorak (58.40) finished first and Danielle Quarry (4th, 1:02.28) and Rachael Slattery (5th, 1:03.65) also competed. Alex Marrucho won the event on the men's side with a time of 53.00 and Silkaitis placed second with a time of 53.18.
Ju won the women's 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:05.71 and Kramer finished in third with a 1:11.97. On the men's side, Kuper won the event with at time of 1:00.49 and Christopher Gaffney finished second with a time of 1:02.23.
Lisa Jaquez claimed first place in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:10.73, while Fernandez took second with a 2:3.11 and Abby Blank finished in fourth with a 2:16.13. Santoro took first for the men with a 1:56.22 and Zgomba followed in second with a 2:00.56.
Mattsson won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.49 for the women. Also competing were Gasparovich (2nd, 24.98), Slattery (5th, 25.93), Natalie McLean (Exh., 27.85), Lindsey Smith (Exh., 28.70) and Kristi Palacios (Exh., 28.79). For the men, Hedo won the event with a time of 21.52, Ackerman finished third with a 22.50 and Sullivan placed fourth with a 22.71.
Ju picked up another win in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 52.55. Also competing for the women were Mattsson (2nd, 53.10), Madeira (3rd, 53.91), Slattery (6th, 57.72), Duerringer (Exh., 55.73), McLean (Exh., 1:02.78) and Palacios (Exh., 1:03.59). On the men's side, Hedo won the event with a time of 46.95, Ackerman finished third with a 49.41 and Sullivan placed fourth with a 50.49.
Kelly Dvorak won the 200-yard backstroke for the women with a time of 2:07.53, Quarry finished third with a 2:13.54 and Samantha Dvorak placed fifth with a time of 2:20.48. McGee won the event for the men with a time of 1:52.48, Marrucho finished second with a 1:54.11 and Silkaitis posted a 2:00.60 for a fourth-place finish.
In the 200-yard breaststroke, Kramer finished first for the women with a time of 2:33.86 and Blank took second place with a time of 2:36.56. Kuper won the event for the men with a time of 2:13.11 and Gaffney finished in second with a time of 2:18.41.
Kelly Dvorak collected another win in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:14.30, while Karin Mullendore finished third with a time of 5:25.49 and Fernandez finished fourth with a time of 5:27.89. Colton Kleynhans finished first for the men with a time of 4:55.02, Harris placed second with a time of 4:59.34 and David Welker finished third with a time of 5:10.62.
Jaquez won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.17 for the women. Also competing were Samantha Dvorak (3rd, 1:01.85), Duerringer (5th, 1:03.71), Smith (Exh., 1:06.02) and McLean (Exh., 1:07.80). Zgomba won the event for the men with a time of 54.02, Riekena placed third with a time of 54.99 and Ray Sophie finished sixth with a 59.50.
Ju picked up her third individual win of the day in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:10.99. Also competing for the women were Quarry (2nd, 2:14.58), Blank (4th, 2:19.67) and Jenna Helm (6th, 2:24.25). McGee won the event for the men with a time of 1:57.06, Marrucho finished second with a time of 2:00.64 and Kuper finished third with a time of 2:01.72.
The Saluki women lost only one race all day when they finished .28 seconds behind Evansville in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of Gasparovich, Slattery, Fernandez and Mullendore took second place with a time of 1:41.93. Also competing in the event were Madeira, Quarry, Samantha Dvorak, Mattsson (3rd, 1:42.49) and Jaquez, Blank, McLean and Helm (5th, 1:48.23).
The men completed their sweep when Ackerman, McGee, Santoro and Sullivan won the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:27.94. Also competing in the event were Marrucho, Riekena, Silkaitis and Harris (2nd, 1:30.08) and Kleynhans, Sophie, Gaffney and Welker (4th, 1:35.87).
"I thought we raced very well," said head coach Rick Walker. "Our times were not exactly what we wanted, but the races were there. That's really the hardest part sometimes is being in the race, and that was much better this year at the start. Evansville is a much improved team with many new freshman, so they provided a much better competition than they have in the past."
The Salukis will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 12 when the women host Vanderbilt and the men host Miami of Ohio. The meet is set to begin at noon at the Rec Center pool.
