Swimming and diving completes day one at Purdue Invitational

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Southern Illinois women's swimming and diving team is in fifth place and the men are in sixth following day one of the Purdue Invitational.
In women's competition Louisville (195) is in first place with Missouri (193) trailing in a very close second. Host school Purdue (174) is in third followed by Florida (161), SIU (81), Stanford (43) and Missouri State (14).
Missouri (203) holds a commanding lead on the men's side followed by Louisville (170), Purdue (153), Missouri State (144), Florida (122), SIU (103) and Stanford (31).
The highlight of the day for the Salukis came when senior Antonio Santoro won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:26.19.
Also competing well for the men was Dennis Hedo with a fifth-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle. Hedo posted a time of 20.75 seconds in the event, just under six seconds behind the event winner, Louisville's Andrei Radzionau.
Therese Mattsson posted SIU's top finish on the women's side with a third-place effort in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.72 seconds.
In the 3-meter diving competition, Nicolle Macvey and Emily Gable competed for the women. MacVey finished in 26th with a score of 165.25, while Gable posted a score of 140.20 for a 28th-place finish.
For the men, Kyle Carevic finished in 16th in the 1-meter competition with a score of 198.80. John Mueller placed 18th with a 171.90 and Alex Moretto followed in 19th with a 134.35.
The Purdue Invitational will continue tomorrow with preliminary events beginning at 10 a.m. and finals following at 6 p.m.
