Volleyball drops match at Creighton in four

OMAHA, Neb. - The Southern Illinois volleyball team opened with a 30-17 victory only to have Creighton's Kelly Goc record a match-high 20 kills and eight block assists to lead the Bluejays to three-straight wins, 30-19, 30-16, 30-22, and a victory over the Salukis in Missouri Valley Conference play Friday night at the Omaha Civic Auditorium.
The Salukis came out strong in game one, hitting .250 with just four errors to start the match. The host team was stagnant recording 13 errors and 11 kills for a -.051 percentage. The Bluejays (17-8, 11-3 MVC) turned it around in the final three games, recording just 14 errors in all three combined, winning their 10th straight match over Southern Illinois (12-13, 4-9 MVC) dating back to 2003.
SIU was led by Jennifer Berwanger with the only double-double of the match, 13 kills and 13 digs. Setter Brooklyn Robbins posted 35 assists and eight digs, while Chandra Roberson converted 10 of those assists into kills.
Trisha Kamphuis recorded a career-high 13 digs in the match, while Kelsie Laughlin added 12 digs to go with seven kills and two block assists. Marina Medic put up a team-high five block assists.
The Salukis were out-blocked for just the ninth time this season and the second time by the Bluejays, 18.0 team blocks to 9.0.
Putting four players in double-digit digs, Bianca Rivera posted a match-high 25 digs for the Bluejays. Allie Oelke added 14 digs and nine kills, while Korie Lebeda added 47 assists, eight digs, two solo and six block assists on the night.
The loss lands the Salukis below .500 for the first time this season. They return to action Saturday at Drake for a 7 p.m. start at the Knapp Center.
