Volleyball downs Bradley in four

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois volleyball team picked up its 14th win of the season, taking Bradley in four, 30-15, 24-30, 30-20, 30-15, Friday night in Missouri Valley Conference play in Davies Gym.
With the victory, SIU (14-13, 6-9 MVC) gained one match on Evansville (12-14, 5-10 MVC) in the race for the sixth spot in the MVC Tournament as the Purple Aces were swept by Northern Iowa Friday.
The Salukis dominated game one, hitting .462 with just four errors on 26 attempts, but Bradley (3-25, 2-13 MVC) fought back in game two, hitting .344 to even the match.
Bradley hit negative in game three with just six kills, doubled with 12 attack errors in the loss. Southern countered with one solo and 12 block assists in the game.
Game four was all Salukis, hitting .326 with just three attack errors in 34 attempts. The home team added 12 block assists in game four to seal the victory, totaling 36 block assists in the match to tie a school record set earlier this season. September 8, Southern recorded 36 block assists against Murray State, setting a school record in a four-game match.
Sophomore Marina Medic led the Salukis with the first double-double of her career, a match-high 13 kills, three solo and 10 block assists. The block assists bring Medic's season total to 106, fifth all-time at SIU.
Sophomore Kelsie Laughlin pitched in her own double-double with 13 kills and 16 digs, while Jennifer Berwanger added nine kills and 13 digs. Chandra Roberson added eight block assists to go with three service aces and 10 kills on the night.
Setter Brooklyn Robbins recorded a match-high 48 assists, hitting .778 with eight kills and just one error on nine attacks. The junior added five service aces and five digs.
Kristie Berwanger tied Medic with 10 block assists on the night, tied for fifth in the record books for block assists in a match.
The Braves offense was balanced, with just one starter reaching double-digit kills. Katrina Goncher recorded a team-high 10 kills, while Jenna Harrison added nine. Sam Black paced BU with 31 assists, while Kaitlyn Comiskey recorded 15 digs.
The Salukis return to action Saturday for the final home match of the regular season, hosting Northern Iowa at 5 p.m. in Davies Gym. The Panthers have won 30 straight matches against the Salukis dating back to 1993.
