Volleyball splits final day of Tribe Classic

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Southern Illinois volleyball team (4-2) swept East Carolina before falling in five games to tournament host William & Mary at the Tribe Classic Saturday.
Saluki libero Kristy Elswick averaged 5.91 digs per game earning all-tournament team honors. In the final match of the tournament, the junior recorded a career-best 33 digs, third-best in SIU history.
In the first match of the day the Salukis took three straight from the Pirates, 30-28, 30-23, 30-25, behind 13 kills from Chandra Roberson. The sophomore middle blocker hit .571 in the match with just one error on 21 attempts.
Kristie Berwanger added 12 kills in the win, while Elswick and Kelsie Laughlin pitched in 13 digs each.
In the nightcap, Southern went five games with the Tribe falling 30-23, 26-30, 30-24, 26-30, 8-15. Laughlin recorded a match-high 18 kills, adding 12 digs for her fifth-career double-double.
Kristie Berwanger, Roberson and Sydney Clark all chipped in 11 kills each, while Roberson added one solo and nine block assists.
The Salukis return to action Wednesday, September 5, when they take on Western Illinois at home in Davies Gym at 7 p.m.
