Volleyball deals the Aces a loss in three

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois volleyball team got sweet revenge from a year ago to blank Evansville in a three-game match, 30-22, 30-25, 30-21, Friday night in Missouri Valley Conference play at Davies Gym.
The Purple Aces (8-6, 1-2 MVC) dropped Southern (10-4, 2-1 MVC) in three a year ago at home to take the final spot in the six-team MVC tournament. The Salukis dominated Friday, leading the entire match except for three points early in the final game.
The Saluki offense dominated hitting .292, out-hitting the Aces 59-42 on the night.
Redshirt freshman Jennifer Berwanger had a career night for the Dawgs recording 14 kills, 12 digs in the three-game set for the third double-double of her career. At outside, she hit .522 on the night with just two errors in 23 attempts.
Kristie Berwanger (13), Chandra Roberson (12) and Kelsie Laughlin (10) also chipped in double-digit kills. Roberson and Berwanger pitched in two block assists each.
Ball control was key for the Salukis as libero Kristy Elswick recorded a match-high 20 digs, just 41 digs shy of the career mark at SIU.
Southern recorded 6.0 team blocks. led by Marina Medic with one solo and three block assists. Brooklyn Robbins recorded two block assists to go with her match-high 50 assists and eight digs.
SIU held 2006 MVC Libero of the Year Julie Walroth to eight digs on the night. Megan Spurlock led Evansville with 12 kills, while Katie Kincaid added 22 assists and 14 digs on the night.
After three-straight matches at home, the Salukis take to the road when they travel to Missouri State and Wichita State Friday and Saturday Sept. 28-29.
