CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois student-athletes worked together over the holidays to put together a community service project, Santa's Shoe Box, for the third-straight year. This year, the department put together 170 wrapped shoe boxes for SIU Head Start students.
The boxes were filled with items like flashcards, crayons, coloring books, play-doh, music recorders, balls and bubbles wrapped by the Student Athletic Advisory Committee representatives. Each Saluki student-athlete donated one dollar, along with athletic staff and administration donations, to fill the boxes.
About 30 SIU athletes delivered the shoe boxes to the young students Dec. 12 at a Christmas party held at head start.
