Swimming and Diving dominates Evansville in season opener

EVANSVILLE, Ill - The Southern Illinois University swimming and diving team opened their 2008-09 season in Evansville this weekend with a win against the Purple Aces.
Both the men and women swept in all but one event. Kelly Dvorak, Kristin Geppert, Kasey Fernandez, and Tovah Gasparovich finished first in 200 medley with a time of 1:49.95. On the men's side, Alex Marrucho, Jameson Kuper, Justin Wolfe, and Dennis Hedo won the 200 medley finishing with a time of 1:35.35.
Jennifer Kwok won the 1000 free with a time of 10:39.15. David Welker finished third on the men's side with a time of 10:22.97, this was the only event the men did not win.
Therese Mattsson dominated in the 200 free with a time of 1:52.81, finishing six seconds in front of Christina Schmidgall of Evansville. Freshman Matt Kruse finished first on the men's side with a time of 1:44.22.
Isabel Madeira placed second in the 50 free with a time of 24.27, just behind Hannah Quast of Evansville. This was the only event the women did not win. Hedo placed first in the 50 free for the men with a time of 21.08.
Danielle Quarry won the 200 IM with a time of 2:14.34, while Tim Silkaitis grabbed the win on the men's side with a time of 1:57.59.
Fernandez placed first in the 100 fly with a time of 1:00.52, while on the men's side Wolfe won with a time of 50.87.
Mattsson captured her second win of the day in the 100 free with a time of 52.56. Anthony Bousquet finished with a time of 47.72 for the win on the men's side.
K. Dvorak finished first in the 100 back with a time of 1:00.42, while Marrucho grabbed a win for the men with a time of 52.43.
Kwok grabbed her second win of the meet with a first-place finish in the 500 free (5:12.86). The men finished in the top-three spots, with Matt Parsons at the top finishing with a time of 4:40.87.
Geppert finished first in the 100 breast with a time of 1:06.98, while Marcela Teixeira (1:08.70) and Keli Kramer (1:10.08) rounded out the second and third-place spots. Kuper, Steve Wood and Christopher Gaffney grabbed the top-three finishes for the men. Kuper finished first with a time of 59.61.
Both the men and women won the the last event of the day, the 200 free relay. Mattsson, Madeira, Emily Duerringer, and Rachael Slattery won on the women's side with a time of 1:38.83. Hedo, Bousquet, Silkaitis, and Kyle Riekena finished first for the men with a time of 1:25.98.
The Salukis will return to action on Friday, Oct. 31 as they host New Orleans. Meet time is set for 5 p.m. at the Rec Center pool.
