UT-Arlington edges women's tennis, 5-2

ARLINGTON, Texas - The Southern Illinois University women's tennis team fell in a close match at UT-Arlington Wednesday, 5-2. The Salukis are now 6-4 after their match against the Mavs.
Sabine Tsala Mvilongo and Jessica Flannery started the match off at the top seed doubles spot, falling to Monika Hadvigerova and Klara Jagosova, 8-1. At No. 2 doubles, Martina Vianna Cé and Michela Cruise teamed up against Daiana Negreanu and Sara Pesic, battling for the win, but dropped the match 8-3. Andrea Courtney and Amanda Taillefer won by default at No. 3 doubles due to UT-Arlington (3-5) lacking a sixth player.
The Salukis (6-4) battled strong winds heading into singles with Tsala at the top seed. Jagosova was able to edge Tsala to grab the win, 6-0, 6-2. Cé stepped in at No. 2 singles, falling to Hadvigerova, 6-4, 6-1. Cruise competed against Negreanu, dropping the No. 3 singles match, 6-2, 6-3. Flannery came out strong at No. 4 singles, fighting for the win, but Pesic was able to slip by with a 6-4, 7-6(7) win. Agata Skorupska was up 3-0 in the first set against Nelli Bodiford at No. 5 singles, when Bodiford retired giving Skorupska the win by default. Taillefer also won by default at No. 6 singles, with UT-Arlington having no sixth player for competition.
"UTA is a very hard-hitting team," said head coach Audra Nothwehr. "Trying to adjust to their pace and the strong winds made it tough to find our rhythm on the courts."
The Salukis will continue play in Texas, taking on North Texas in Dallas, Fri. March 14. The match time is set for 3 p.m.
