SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Five unearned runs in the sixth inning were the difference in Southern Illinois University's 16-8 win over Texas-Pan American earlier tonight in the first round of the Irish Classic at Nelson Wolff Stadium.
SIU (7-6) and UT-Pan American (4-9) met in a sloppy game that saw a total of 24 hits, 24 runs, 15 walks, four errors, five hit batsmen, three wild pitches and two passed balls.
The Salukis built a 7-0 lead after scoring one in the second and six in the third.
SIU's six runs, the most in an inning this season, were fueled by six hits, including a two-RBI double by Owen Mackedon and run-scoring singles from Aaron Roberts and Tyler Choate. Two other runs came home courtesy of an error and sacrifice fly, as the Salukis batted around.
UT-Pan American quickly cut SIU's lead to three (7-4) when Jordan Rutenbar took Cody Adams deep for a three-run homer in the fourth. Two hitters later, Adams plunked Abraham Garcia, who came around to score with the help of a single and bases loaded walk.
Garcia came up for the Broncs again in the fifth and tied the game with a three-run home run off Saluki reliever Tom Danahy.
SIU answered with a two-out, RBI-double by Mackedon to regain a 8-7 edge in the fifth, but the Broncs tied things up again when back-to-back wild pitches plated Chris Lozano in the sixth.
UT-Pan American then buried itself for good in the sixth.
The Broncs committed two errors, issued three walks and hit a batter. As a result, SIU came away with five unearned runs to take a 13-8 lead. Tyler Lairson's two-out, two-RBI double was the Salukis' only hit in the inning.
SIU scored twice more in the seventh and once more in the eighth to polish off the 16-8 win.
Daniel Wells (1-0) earned his first win of the season. Wells struck out two in 1.1 scoreless innings and got Billy Donaho to fly out with runners on first and second in the sixth. Wells relieved Danahy and retired all four hitters he faced.
David De Leon (0-1) took the fall for UT-Pan American, giving up one hit and three runs in three innings. De Leon also walked two.
Mackedon went 4-for-5 with a run scored and four RBI to lead SIU, which registered a season-high 16 runs. Scott Elmendorf (2) and Mark Kelly (2) joined Mackedon with multiple-hits.
SIU wraps up play in Irish Classic with games against Notre Dame (12 p.m.) and Buffalo (3 p.m.) Saturday.
