OMAHA, Neb. - The Southern Illinois University women's tennis team defeated Creighton, 7-0, improving to an 8-7 record overall, 2-0 in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Salukis (8-7, 2-0) swept the Bluejays (5-7, 0-3) in singles, and took two of the three doubles matches.
Martina Vianna Cé and Michela Cruise paired up at No. 2 doubles, defeating Lauren Mastro and Lindsey Erickson, 8-4. Amanda Taillefer and Andrea Courtney grabbed the victory at No. 3 doubles against Rachelle Shoji and Cassie Yoneshige, 8-2. The No. 1 doubles team of Sabine Tsala Mvilongo and Jessica Flannery were the last to finish, finding themselves down 5-2 to Sarah and Leesa Cadwallader, but came back to tie 7-7, and win the match, 8-7, in the tiebreaker.
"We started off a little rocky at doubles competition," said head coach Audra Nothwehr. "But then we came to heading into singles."
The Salukis swept the Blujays in singles, with six straight-set victories. Mvilongo defeated Erickson 6-1, 6-4, at the top seed. Cé played a tough match at No. 2 singles, but came out with a 7-6, 6-1 win over Mastro. Cruise met Sarah Cadwallader at No. 3 singles with a 6-2, 6-2 victory. Flannery defeated Leesa Cadwallader at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-3. Taillefer had no problem with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Toneshige, while Agata Skorupska swept Shoji at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-0.
"We were very aggressive," Nothwehr said. "We were attacking and just went out and got it. Hopefully we take that momentum into tomorrow."
The Salukis travel to Wichita State Sunday, taking on the Shockers at 10 a.m.
