Swimming and Diving topped by Western Kentucky

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois swimming and diving team hosted Western Kentucky Saturday afternoon where both the men and women fell to the Hilltoppers. The men fell 157-143, while the women fell 182-115.
Therese Mattsson earned the first win of the day for the Salukis, finishing first in the 200 free with a time of 1:49.95, the fourth best time in SIU history. Mattsson also won the 100 free recording a time of 51.51. Matt Kruse grabbed the win for the men in the 200 free, with a time of 1:41.63. Freshman Jennifer Kwok finished a close second in the 1000 free with a time of 10:28.56.
Tim Silkaitis earned a first-place finish in the 100 back with 52.05, while Kyle Riekena and Alex Marrucho grabbed the second and third place finishes, respectively. Justin Wolfe and Dennis Hedo also won events for the Salukis, Wolfe recording 1:51.25 in the 200 fly and Hedo finishing with 20.94 in the 50 free. Hedo went on to win the 100 free with a time of 46.40.
Former Sun Belt diver of the week, Justin Ruszkowski won both the 1-meter (282.29) and 3-meter dive (262.35) for the Salukis. This week's MVC diver of the week, Emily Gable won the 3-meter dive on the womens' side with 270.97.
Kelly Dvorak and Alexandre Marrucho grabbed first-place finishes in the 200 back. Dvorak recorded a time of 2:04.32, while Marrucho finished with 1:51.21. Wolfe finished first for the Saluki men in the 100 fly with a time of 50.58, with Anthony Bousquet right behind for the second-place finish with 50.78. K. Dvorak won her second event of the day finishing with 2:12.66 in the 200 IM.
Both the men and women won the 400 free relay. Mattsson, Tovah Gasparovich, Isabel Madeira and Emily Duerringer finished with 3:30.01, while Hedo, Bousquet, Silkaitis and Kruse finished with a time of 3:05.86.
The Salukis will host Evansville on Saturday, Jan. 31 in their last regular-season meet before both the men and women get ready for conference championships. SIU's meet against the Purple Aces is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. at the SIU Rec Center pool.
