Swimming and Diving earns MVC weekly honors

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - First-year Saluki Kirsten Groome was named State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Swimmer of the Week for her outstanding performance to begin the 2009-10 season.
The Shreveport, La. native posted a total of six first-place finishes over the first few weeks of competition, including an impressive 16:24.12 in the 1650 free at the SIU Miler Oct. 2. Groome also swept first-place honors in the 200 free (1:54.99) and 500 free (4:51.95) in the Salukis' dual opener at Evansville, as well as the 200 fly (2:07.30) and 400 IM (4:30.64) against SEC opponent Vanderbilt last weekend.
Southern Illinois women's swimming and diving currently holds a 2-0 record so far this season. The team will return to action Friday, Oct. 30 when they host the University of Washington at Dr. Edward J. Shea Natatorium.
