CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois women's basketball team inks six during the early signing period for 2010 Saluki head coach Missy Tiber announced Sunday for her first full recruiting class after taking over the program in April.
The Salukis add 5-7 guard Sydney Goins from Morristown, Tenn., 5-8 combo guard Taylor Ignoto from Thousand Oaks, Calif., 5-6 combo guard Brooke LeMar from Canyon Country, Calif., 6-2 forward Raquel Miller from Jackson, Tenn., 5-0 point guard Olivia Patterson from Cibolo, Texas, and 6-3 center CiCi Shannon from Hazel Crest, Ill. Tiber's 2010 class is ranked in the top 150 in the country.
"Our number one goal for this class was to recruit great players that are winners," Tiber said. "If these athletes bring that mentality they carry that over to the next level and it's contagious to the whole team. We also needed to address speed, athleticism, post play, and outside shooting. I think we covered those things nicely in this class and am very pleased with the quality of players we were able to get in this first recruiting class. I would like to thank my coaching staff for the effort put forth in the recruitment of these six young women. I feel we made huge strides in building this program from the ground up, and with the foundation we are instilling now I am very excited about the future of Saluki women's basketball."
PROFILES ON THE FUTURE SALUKIS
Sidney Goins
5-7 guard
Hometown: Morristown, Tenn.
High School: Hamblen Morristown West
AAU Team: Tennessee Flight Select
Notes: Helped lead her high school team to a 30-2 record as a junior earning all-conference and all-region honors, including all-region most valuable player, averaging 17.0 points and 7.0 boards during the 2008-09 season... as a sophomore helped her team to a sub-state appearance averaging 16.0 points and 9.0 boards per game... also all-state in track and field, earning honors in both the high jump and 4x200-meter relay.
Coach Tiber on Goins: "Sidney Goins is a player I have watched for a couple years now so she was the first player I called in the 10 class. She has excellent speed and athleticism and will probably be the fastest kid on the team. Sidney brings great overall skill as well as a knack for finishing around the basket. Coached by Johnny Gaylon at Morristown West, her team has also been very successful and that mind-set and subsequent success carried over to her summer program, the Tennessee Flight Select under Brandi Stallings. Sidney brings the intangibles that are a must for every successful program."
Taylor Ignoto
5-8 combo guard
Hometown: Thousand Oaks, Calif.
High School: Westlake
AAU Team: FBC Basketball
Notes: Averaged a league-leading 17.9 points as a junior, shooting 45 percent from the field, 42 percent from beyond the arc and 85 percent from the free throw line, named her team's captain, earning All-Ventura Country first team, All-Marmonte League first team and LA Daily News Honorable Mention... As a sophomore, averaged 16.4 points and 4.0 assists per game, earning all-league second team honors and all-area honorable mention... a four-year starter, currently has 1,19 1 career points heading into her senior season.
Coach Tiber on Ignoto: "Taylor Ignoto is another player from the FBC program that we actually recruited first. She was hurt during the summer viewing period so a lot of schools didn't get to see her play and she pretty much fell through the cracks. We probably wouldn't have gotte n her if it wasn't for that. She provides another outside scoring threat, but Taylor is not just a shooter. She can get to the basket and the best thing about her is that she finishes with contact. She also brings us some speed and athleticism and the ability to create her own shot."
Brooke LeMar
5-6 combo guard
Hometown: Canyon Country, Calif.
High School: Canyon
AAU Team: FBC White
Notes: ESPN Hoopgurlz ranked Top-100 guards for 2010... averaged 14.8 points and 5.5 assists per game as a junior leading her team to an 18-10 record, earning All-Santa Clarita Valley All-Area first team and first team all-league honors.... as a sophomore earned first team all-area honors and first team all-league... two-time Canyon High School Most Valuable Player and three-time Foothill League assist leader... with her AAU team earned MVC honors at both the Adidas Super 64 National Championship and Adidas Summertime Invitational in 2008.
Coach Tiber on LeMar: "Brooke LeMar is another point guard that we are also very excited about. She played with FBC National Program, a highly regarded AAU organization, under Ray Mayes. Brooke has the ability to put up points for her team. She has recorded several 30 plus scoring games but her ability to pass the ball was what drew her to us. Brooke has great range from the perimeter but she can also break down the defense with her quickness allowing for her to make those passes."
Raquel Miller
6-2 forward
Hometown: Jackson, Tenn.
High School:Liberty Tech
AAU Team: Memphis Elite
Notes: ESPN Hoopgurlz No. 73 forward... averaged 9.0 points and 5.0 rebounds as a junior last year in her first full year playing varsity basketball... didn't play much as a freshman and missed all of her sophomore year after undergoing surgery.
Coach Tiber on Miller: "Raquel Miller is an athletic four sport player. She is long and moves very well. She has good post moves and can also extend to the three point line very comfortably. She fits the mold of a typical forward in our program. Raquel is a smooth shooting lefty and moves up and down the court effortlessly. As Raquel gets stronger, she has the other tools necessary to develop into a great NCAA DI player. What I like about Raquel is that she has a very high ceiling for improvement. She missed her sophomore season due to illness, and on a daily basis she works hard to make up for the time lost."
Olivia Patterson
5-0 point guard
Hometown: Cibolo, Texas
High School:Byron P. Steele II
AAU Team: South Texas Hoyas
Notes: Named first team all-district and all-region as a junior, helping lead her team to its second-straight trip to the Texas Class 4A state semi-finals... as a sophomore, named academic all-district and all-district honorable mention... in 2006 (14 and under) and 2007 (15 and under) named to Basketball Congress International All-America Team.
Coach Tiber on Patterson: "Olivia Patterson is small but very fast and athletic point guard. She has excellent ball handling skills, can make every type of pass, and is a pesky on ball defender that will set the tone defensively against the opposing point guard. Her ability to get the basket will open scoring opportunities for others. Most of all she brings a winning mind-set in that she comes from a highly successful high school program coached by Kari Wallace. Steele High School just doesn't lose and Olivia has been a huge part of that."
CiCi Shannon
6-3 center
Hometown: Hazel Crest, Ill.
High School: Homewood Flossmoor
AAU Team: Illinois Wolverines
Notes: Collegiate Girls Basketball Report No. 31 center and No. 160 overall... All-Star Girls Report No. 268 overall... as a junior at Homewood Flossmoor High School averaged 9.0 points, 12.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game.
Coach Tiber on Shannon: "CiCi Shannon is a tremendous pick-up for our program. With her size and length, she has the ability to cause disruption for the opposing teams. What really impresses me about CiCi is her mobility. Watching her this summer and fall, I recognized that she would be a great fit in our up-tempo style. She beats her man down the court on every possession, and with her high school team she wins every sprint. CiCi can score around the basket and has a jump shot to 15-footer. I am excited to watch CiCi mature under the guidance of post coach Michelle Smith. CiCi is a great athlete and has a huge upside."
Jordyn Courier
6-0 guard/forward
Hometown: Delavan, Wis.
High School: Big Foot
AAU Team: Wisconsin Lakers
Notes: Four-year letterwinner and starter at Big Foot High School... three-time first-team all-conference and All-Walworth County selection heading into her senior season... in three seasons compiled 804 points, 489 rebounds and 164 career blocks... averaged 12.8 points, 7.0 rebounds and 5.0 blocks per game as a junior... first basketball player from her high school to sign Division I offer... has 6-0 wing span.
Coach Tiber on Shannon: "We are happy that Jordyn has decided to join our program. She will be a great asset with her size and versatility as she can run the guard and post positions. Jordyn gives us another scoring threat from the perimeter and she uses her length to block shots defensively."
