Groome named MVC Swimmer of the Week

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Southern Illinois distance swimmer Kirsten Groome has been named State Farm MVC Swimmer of the Week, the league announced Wednesday, for her efforts last weekend at the Mizzou Invitational.

Groome took top honors in the 1650 free at the meet against Missouri S&T, Boise State, Colorado State, Drury, Arizona State, Nebraska, North Dakota, and Missouri. She also notched a fifth-place finish in the 500 free.

This marks the third time in her freshman campaign Groome has earned this award. She was also honored by the Valley Nov. 18 for her record-breaking performance in SIU's dual meet against Mizzou, as well as Oct. 21 for her efforts in the Salukis first three meets of the 2009-10 season.

SIU Swimming and Diving will travel to Missouri State Jan. 23 for its first conference meet of the year. Competition is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
