MVC Championships Day Three Preliminaries

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The final day of the 2009 State Farm/MVC Swimming and Diving Championships began with preliminary races in the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, and 1650 free.
Missouri State's Jordan Hawkins won the first event of the day, the 200-yard backstroke. Her time of 2:00.46 broke the MVC meet record as well as the overall conference record. Kelly Dvorak was SIU's top finisher, grabbing a second-place finish with a time of 2:03.52. Danielle Quarry was right behind Dvorak, finishing in 2:05.83 for a third-place finish.
Therese Mattsson won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.41, breaking the school record, MVC meet record, pool record, and all-time conference record. Emily Duerringer placed fourth (52.55), Isabel Madeira finished fifth (52.66), and Tovah Gasparovich grabbed a sixth-place finish with a time of 52.82.
The Salukis grabbed three top-five finishes in the 200-yard breaststroke. Freshman Kristin Geppert led SIU with a time of 2:23.95. Keli Kramer finished second with 2:24.69 an Marcela Teixiera finished fourth with a time of 2:2474.
Kasey Fernandez placed in the top-eight for SIU with a time of 2:08.52. Her fifth-place finish automatically advances her to the finals.
Karin Mullendore and Jill Weckbach qualified for the finals in the 1650 free. Mullendore finished fifth with a time of 18:11.63 and Weckbach finished seventh of a time of 18:36.11.
Heading into to tonight's finals, Missouri State is in first place with 626 points. Illinois State is in second with 470, while SIU is just one point behind the Redbirds with 469. Northern Iowa is in fourth with 238 points and Evansville rounds out the current standings with 220 points.
The finals are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. with a senior recognition ceremony 20 minutes prior to the meet.
