Swimming and Diving places third at State Farm/MVC Championships

CARBONDALE, Ill. - After three days of tough competition at the 2009 State Farm/Missouri Valley Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, Missouri State University took home the Valley title.
The Bears took first place with 944.5 points, Illinois State placed second with 770 points, Southern Illinois took third place with 716 points, Northern Iowa finished fourth with 361 points and Evansville finished fifth with 325.5 points.
Lauren Terzis of Illinois State won the 1650 free with a time of 16:58.19, breaking the MVC meet record and the all-time conference record. Freshman Jennifer Kwok grabbed a seventh-place finish for the Salukis with a time of 17:34.78.
Kelly Dvorak broke the school record in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:01.69, finishing second in the event. Missouri State's Jordan Hawkins finished first with a time of 1:58.71, breaking the MVC meet record and overall conference record.
Isabel Madeira won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.81, while Therese Mattsson was a close second with 50.93. Emily Duerringer finished fifth for the Salukis with 52.49 and Tovah Gasparovich placed sixth with 52.53.
Keli Kramer was SIU's top finisher in the 200-yard breaststroke with a 2:23.81 second-place finish. Marcela Teixiera finished third with a time of 2:24.78 and Kristin Geppert finished fourth with 2:25.38.
Kasey Fernandez finished sixth for the Salukis in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:10.14. Emily Gable won the 3-meter dive with a score of 281.60.
Southern Illinois won the 400-yard freestyle relay, breaking the pool record, MVC meet record, MVC overall record and tied the SIU record. Mattsson, Gasparovich, Duerringer, and Madeira finished the race with a time of 3:24.04.
Head coach Rick Walker was happy with the team's results and proud of the accomplishments at the MVC Championships.
"We couldn't be more pleased with a group of athletes who worked hard and earned the results they got" Walker said. "We will now go back to work and try to fill in some of the gaps that may have left us short. We will not sit still until we've accomplished that goal."
Several records were broken over the three days of competition, with swimmers from Southern Illinois, Missouri State and Illinois State entering the record books.
"This is by far the biggest gain this conference has made since I've been here," said Walker. "Huge stride to a new level."
