St. Louis, Mo.-Three Saluki tennis players have been named to the Missouri Valley Conference tennis scholar-athlete teams for the 2008-09 season the league announced Wednesday.
Anton Leonenko and Hugo Vidal were both named to the men's first team while Martina Vianna Ce was named to the women's first team as well.
Leonenko, a junior from Calgary, Canada studying finance, has a 3.90 GPA at SIU where this season he won Flight 5 singles at the MVC Championships in January while compiling an 11-7 overall record and 3-2 MVC record in singles this season. Leonenko was also named to the SIU Dean's list last year.
Vidal, a senior from La Ciotat, France studying business managment, has a 3.827 GPA at SIU and this is his second straight year earning a spot on the MVC scholar-athlete first team. Vidal has an overall singles reord of 13-6 and went 6-0 in MVC action.
"I am so very pleased that both Hugo and Anton have achieved this honor. They both work extremely hard to excel in their studies and deserve to be recognized and I am very proud of them both," Head coach Dann Nelson said.
On the women's side, Martina Vianna Ce also earned her second consecutive scholar athlete award as she earned an honorable mention nod last season. Vianna Ce, a junior studying foreign language and international business, has a 3.724 GPA at SIU and was also named a ITA Scholar Athlete for the 2007-08 season.
Vianna Ce currently has an overall singles record of 12-9 and 6-1 in MVC play. She also partnered primarily with Vishakha Sheoran at No. 3 doubles this season as the duo was ranked No. 68 from March 31-April 13.
"Martina is a leader on the court and part of the reason she is co-captain is because she is a leader on the court and in the classroom," Head coach Audra Nothwehr said.
The Salukis will begin play in the MVC Tournament in Omaha, Neb. beginning on Friday as the No. 2 seeded men's squad faces off against No. 7 Creighton while the No. 3 seeded women's squad matches up against No. 6 Evansville. Both matches begin at 12:30 p.m.
