Charleston, Ill.- The Southern Illinois cross country teams started off its competitive season on a positive note as it claimed victories on both sides at the Panther Open at Eastern Illinois University.
Both teams went 7-0 in a double dual competition, which means each team goes one-on-one against each other, beating teams from Danville Community College, Illinois Track Club, Millikin, Eastern Illinois, SIU-Edwardsville, Southeast Missouri State and MVC foe Evansville.
Dan Dunbar won the men's 6K with a time of 25:19.32 while Brad Wrage finished third at 25:29.18.
"It was really nice to see the guys who don't usually get to contribute to the team score to get a chance to be accountable today and step up," Head coach Matt Sparks said.
Neal Anderson came fifth with a time of 25:39.10 while Greg McBride finished in seventh place with a time of 26:02.94 rounding out the Salukis top 10 finishers.
Megan Hoelscher led the SIU women's squad with a second place finish coming in at 18:02.61 while Emily Toennies came in third at 18:10.43
"One thing we always talk about is that you really want to have a really dominant one through five gap and I thought we did that really well today," Sparks said.
A'Seret Dokubo, Ryan Eichleberger and Jamie Pfister finished fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.
The Salukis will next compete in the Saluki Invitational on Sept 26 in Carbondale.
