Carbondale, Ill.- The Southern Illinois men's and women's cross country team hosted the Saluki Early Bird with some promising results in its preseason tune up.
Missouri and Southeast Missouri State also participated in the meet, which does not count towards the team's overall record.
While SIU rested four of their top five runners, Dan Dunbar was able to finish first in the men's 6K with a time of 19:03.5 followed by Brad Wrage who finished with a time of 19:23.3.
"We held out four of our top five guys who are just training right now and it was good to see Dan Dunbar race again," Head coach Matt Sparks said. "It's been almost a year since he's competed so we wanted to get some of the rust off of him.
Jared Milam finished eighth with a time of 19:53.1 to round out the competition for the Salukis.
Emily Toennies finished first for the SIU women and fourth overall with a time of 14:33.2 while Megan Hoelscher finished close behind in fifth place with a time of 14:37.6.
"On the women's side we really haven't done a lot in practice so this just gives us the chance to see how the summer went for some people," Sparks said.
A'Seret Dokubo finished in seventh place with a time of 14:54.0 while Jamie Pfister came in ninth with a time of 15:14.8 to round out the top ten finishers.
Kalyn Cherry finished 11th while Kristian Baldwin and Julie Mangler finished 17 and 21st respectively.
The Salukis will open their season on Sep. 11 as they travel to Charleston, Ill. to compete in the Panther Invite at Eastern Illinois University.
