Swimming and Diving completes Day One of Purdue Invitational

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - At the end of the first day of competition at the Purdue Invitational, the Southern Illinois men stand in fourth place and the women are in eighth.
The men are competing as part of a seven-team field which includes host Purdue, which is the leader after day one, Ohio State, Louisville, Missouri State, Cincinnati, and Michigan. The women are admist the same field with the addition of Arkansas, the leader on the women's side.
In the first event of the night, the top Saluki relay teams placed 12th for the women and seventh for the men in the 200 free relay.
Matt Parsons, Matt Kruse and Csaba Gercsak all competed in the A final for the 500 free and finished fifth, sixth, and eighth. Mazen Aziz notched a second-place finish in the B final for 11th place overall.
Steve Wood swam to a fifth-place finish in the B final, 13th overall, in the 200 IM.
Junior Justin Wolfe scored the first top finish for SIU, taking the crown in the 50 free with a time of 20.47.
The women's team of Isabela Castro, Kristin Geppert, Kirsten Groome and Luisa Silveira placed 18th in the 400 medley relay to close out the night, while the men's team of Cesar Perez, Wood, Wolfe and Parsons took sixth.
The three-day invitational will resume with preliminaries tomorrow morning.
