Swimming and Diving wraps up competition at Purdue Invitational

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Southern Illinois swimming and diving stayed the course throughout the weekend at the Purdue Invitational, as the men remained in fourth place and the women in eighth at the conclusion of the three-day competition.
Host Purdue University took the team crown on the men's side, while the University of Arkansas won the team title for the women.
Saturday night opened with the 200 medley relay, where the women's 'A' team of Isabela Castro, Kristin Gepert, Marcela Teixeira and Luisa Silveira placed 19th out of 26 teams. The men's 'A' team of Cesar Perez, Steve Wood, Justin Wolfe and Matt Parsons finished 10th, while the 'B' team of Kyle Riekena, Jeff Chen, Seyi Fatayi-Williams and El Badrawi finished 11th.
Kirsten Groome finished seventh in the C final of the 400 IM for a 23rd-place finish overall. Csaba Gercsak and Wood recorded second and third place times in the men's C final.
Wolfe earned his second individual title of the competition, placing first in the 100 fly with an NCAA B qualifying time of 48.19. The Salukis also made their mark in the 200 free, as the junior duo of Matt Kruse and Parsons recorded second and fifth-place finishes. Badrawi finished seventh in the B final, 15th overall, and Mazen Aziz and Chris Jordan placed in the C final.
Geppert and Teixeira swam to fifth and sixth place times in the B final for the 100 breast, while Wood finished in 11th place overall for the men. Riekena tied for sixth in the 100 back B final.
In the 3-meter diving event, Justin Ruszkowski scored a sixth-place finish with a score of 316.70.
Rounding out the second day of competition, SIU's relay team of Jill Weckbach, Groome, Castro and Jennifer Kwok earned 15th place in the 800 free relay, while Parsons, Badrawi, Aziz and Kruse cruised to a third-place finish.
On Sunday, Perez started things off strong once again for the Saluki men, recording a fifth-place finish in the 200 back, while Riekena followed in 12th.
Badrawi and Wolfe kept up SIU's presence in the A final, notching second and seventh place times in the 100 free. Kruse and Jared Bradd followed in third and sixth for the C final.
Geppert recorded a sixth-place time in the B final for the 200 breast, finishing 14th overall, while Wood finished in the same spot on the men's side.
Parsons finished seventh in the 200 fly before Groome finished 14th and Gercsak finished fifth in the 1650.
In the final event, Weckbach, Rachael Barry, Teixeira and Silveria finished 18th out of 25 in the 400 free relay, while Wolfe, Bradd, Badrawi and Parsons exploded for a second-place finish.
The Salukis will next compete as a team in a tri-meet with Washington (Mo.) and Lindenwood on Jan. 7 in St. Louis.
