CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Southern Illinois swimming and diving fell to Big Ten opponents Illinois and Michigan State Friday night, as the men were defeated by MSU 181.5-115.5 and the women were downed by U of I (218.5, 95) and MSU (204, 80.5).
The Saluki men notched 11 individual top-three finishes. Justin Wolfe took top honors in the 100 fly, with Matt Parsons right behind in second place. Parsons also finished first in the 200 fly.
Mazen Aziz and Csaba Gercsak handed out a one-two punch in the 500 free finishing first and second, respectively, with Chris Jordan following up in fourth.
Cesar Perez scored the title in the 200 IM, and Steve Wood finished third. Wood also touched in at third place in the 100 breast, and Perez finished second in the 100 back. El Badrawi earned the last top spot for the men, winning the 100 free outright.
SIU also placed second in the meet-opening 200 medley relay, with the junior quad of Perez, Wood, Wolfe and Parsons. Badrawi and Matt Kruse replaced Wood and Perez to help the Salukis place second in the 400 free relay as well.
On the women's side, Missouri Valley Conference Swimmer of the Week Kirsten Groome continued her winning ways with first-place times in the 1000 and 500 free. Jennifer Kwok was not far behind, finishing third in both races.
Isabela Castro finished second in the 200 fly and third in the 100 fly. In the 100 breast, Marcela Teixeira swam to a fourth-place finish and Kristin Geppert finished sixth, and in the 200 breast Geppert finished fourth and Teixeira followed in fifth.
Jill Weckbach recorded fourth-place times in the 1000 and 200 free.
In the diving events, Michelle Bell and Brittany Weigel tied for seventh place in the women's 1-meter dive, while Justin Ruszkowski totaled second-place marks in both the 3-meter and the 1-meter. Nathan Day ended in third place in the 1-meter competition.
Southern Illinois men now hold a 2-2 record on the year and the women are 2-4. The Salukis will next compete at the three-day Purdue Invitational, held Nov. 19-21 in West Lafayette, Ind.
