Swimmers conclude competition at USA Swimming National Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Southern Illinois swimmers wrapped up competition at the USA Swimming National Championships Saturday at Ohio State University.
Freshman Csaba Gercsak paced the Salukis, finishing inside the top-20 in the country with a 19th-place time against 45 competitors in the 1650 free (15:33.75).
In the 200 back, Cesar Perez finished 35th overall with a time of 1:49.64. El Badrawi swam a 46.05 in the 100 free preliminaries to finish 56th.
Justin Wolfe narrowly missed qualifying for the bonus final in the 200 fly, swimming 1:49.71 for 31st place. Matt Parsons finished behind Wolfe in 45th with a time of 1:51.84.
As a team, the Saluki men finished eighth out of 12 in the College/University Division with 23 total points, including three relay finishes inside the top-20 in the nation (50 free relay - 15th place; 50 and 100 medley relay - 17th place).
With these national championships against the most elite swimmers in the country now under their belt, SIU will return to team competition in the new year, traveling to St. Louis, Mo. to take on Washington and Lindenwood on Jan. 7.
