Results: Day One Preliminaries
CARBONDALE, Ill. - The 2010 State/Farm Missouri Valley Conference Swimming and Diving Championships began this morning with preliminaries in three events.
The top 16 swimmers advance to A and B finals to begin at 6 p.m. this evening.
Southern's Kirsten Groome cruised to a first-place finish in the 500 free preliminary with a time of 4:50.84. Jennifer Kwok, Keli Kramer, and Jill Weckbach also qualified for the 500 free finals.
Freshman Melissa Larocque finished fifth in the 200 IM, with Kristin Geppert right behind in sixth, placing them both in the A final tonight. Jessica Anderson qualified for the B final.
In the last event of the morning session, the 50 free, Therese Mattsson placed second and Tovah Gasparovich placed fifth, qualifying them for the A final. Sophomore Susan Minkel qualified to represent the Salukis in the B final after an exciting swim-off with Morgan Buechele of Illinois State.
In addition to the final races for these three events, tonight's competition will also include the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 medley relay.
