WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Southern Illinois freshman swimmer Kirsten Groome competed in the first day of the NCAA Division I Championships at Purdue University Thursday, as she participated in the first of her two events, the 500 freestyle.
Groome placed 59th out of 63 individuals in the 500 free preliminary with a time of 4:52.69. While it is not enough to qualify for tonight's finals, having the chance to compete at the national level is still an impressive accomplishment for the first-year Saluki.
"Kirsten did not come out as sharp as we hoped today," said head coach Rick Walker. "While it was not anything that she did, it has been six weeks since she last competed. She said she feels good though, and we are both very hopeful for Saturday's mile."
Groome will return to the pool Saturday afternoon to compete in the 1650 freestyle.
