CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Saluki women's tennis' nine match home winning streak came to a crashing halt Wednesday, as the Saint Louis Billikens topped Southern Illinois, 5-2.
The last time the Dawgs lost in Carbondale was April 12, 2009, when they were ousted by Wichita State, 6-1. In addition, the loss marks the first time since Jan. 29-30 that Southern has dropped consecutive matches.
"This was a very disappointing match," said Southern head coach Audra Nothwehr. "We have just lacked consistency in the last couple matches. We're getting into close matches and we are just not pulling through."
The lone Saluki win in singles came courtesy of Emily Whitney, who defeated SLU's Casey Miller 6-0, 6-2. The victory was the fifth straight for the sophomore at second singles and ties her for the team lead with 11 singles wins on the season.
However, the end result was very similar to Sunday's loss to Illinois State, as the Salukis failed to take advantage of the doubles point win.
Southern Illinois nabbed their fifth straight doubles point with wins in second and third doubles. Jennifer Dien and Jessica Flannery teamed up to take down Hailee Elmore and Kasia Tomalak, 8-6. Meanwhile, the duo of Michela Cruise and Anastacia Simons downed Sarah Septien and Mia Elmore, 8-5.
The Salukis will return to action Saturday at 1 p.m., when they match up with the Panthers of Northern Iowa at the University Courts.
