Swimming and Diving sweeps weekly conference awards

ST. LOUIS - Junior Kirsten Groome has been named Missouri Valley Conference Swimmer of the Week, and teammate Brittany Weigel has earned MVC Diver of the Week honors, the league announced on Tuesday.
Groome has now won MVC Swimmer of the Week eight times in her career; she won three times last year as a sophomore. Groome won the 500 freestyle and the 1000 freestyle in convincing fashion on Saturday in the Salukis' dual meet at Missouri State. She won the 1000 freestyle by 18 seconds and finished eight second better than her closest competitor in the 500 freestyle. Groome also anchored the 400 freestyle relay team that finished second.
Weigel, a sophomore, was named MVC Diver of the Week for the first time in her career. Weigel won both the one and three meter dives easily. Her score in the 1-meter dive (252.22) outdistanced second place by more than 35 points, and her score in the 3-meter dive (258.37) won by more than 30 points.
Weigel, Groome and the rest of the Saluki women are back in action on Nov. 5, when they head to Lexington, Ky., for a tri-meet with Kentucky and Missouri.
