TEAM FACTS
Southern Illinois Salukis (2-2)
Head Coach: Missy Tiber, Third Year (176-124 overall, 9-54 at SIU)
Northern Illinois Huskies (2-3)
Head Coach: Kathi Bennett, Second Year (311-198 overall, 15-20 at NIU)
SIU VS. NORTHERN ILLINOIS
The Salukis are 11-13 all-time against Northern Illinois. The last time the two teams faced off, the Huskies' Courtney Shelton hit a half-court heave at the buzzer to eke out a 46-45 win last year in Carbondale. NIU enters Tuesday's matchup on a two-game losing streak after falling to Missouri Valley Conference teams Bradley and Illinois State last week. The Huskies have spread out their scoring early in the season with four players averaging seven or more points per game. Shelton leads NIU with an average of 9.3 points, followed by Amanda Corral with 8.4 points, Claire Jakubicek with 8.0 points and Jenna Thorp with 7.0 points per game. Alicia Johnson leads the Huskies with an average of 5.4 rebounds per game while Thorp figures for 5.0 boards per contest.
SALUKIS TOP TENNESSEE STATE
Southern ran out to a 16-point halftime lead and never looked back, beating Tennessee State 89-68 in Nashville for its second consecutive win. Cartaesha Macklin led four Salukis in double figures with 20 points in addition to tallying seven rebounds and four assists. Teri Oliver was second on the team with 18 points while Charnise Mitchell chipped in 14 points and seven rebounds and Brooke LeMar added 11 points and six assists. Also for Southern, CiCi Shannon pulled down a career-best 14 rebounds to go along with five blocks.
PUTTING POINTS ON THE BOARD
Southern's 89 points against Tennessee State marked the highest offensive output for the Salukis since scoring 95 against Indiana State on Jan. 3, 2008. SIU hadn't scored in the 80s since scoring 80 against Drake on Jan. 14, 2010.
STARTING A STREAK
SIU's win over Tennessee State helped Southern match its win total from last year just four games into the season. It also marked the first time the Salukis have won consecutive games since the 2008-09 season. A win against NIU would mark SIU's first three-game winning streak since the 2007-08 season.
OLIVER LEADING THE VALLEY
Four games into the 2011-12 season, Saluki junior Teri Oliver leads the Missouri Valley Conference with an average of 19.5 points per game. She opened the season with a career-high 32-point outing at Austin Peay and has since had two 18-point games.
SALUKIS STAY IN-STATE
SIU's 2011-12 schedule features matchups against seven different in-state schools. That is the most Illinois teams the Salukis have faced since the 1983-84 season. Southern is 227-132 all-time against other schools in the state of Illinois.
OLIVER FOR THREE
Teri Oliver hit four 3-pointers against Tennessee State to move up to 189 career 3-pointer made. Oliver needs to make just three more to dethrone Karrie Redeker (1988-92) for most all-time at SIU. Oliver became SIU's all-time leader in career 3-point attempts in the Salukis' season-opener against Austin Peay.
SHANNON'S BLOCK PARTY
Sophomore center CiCi Shannon's five blocks against Tennessee State tied the eighth-highest single-game block total in school history. Shannon now holds seven of the top 16 single-game block totals in school history. She also moved up to 97 career blocks and now stands seven blocks shy of Kathy Kampwerth's (1985-89) career blocks record.
