Groome earns MVC Swimmer of the Week honors

SAINT LOUIS, Mo. - Southern Illinois sophomore Kirsten Groome has been named Missouri Valley Conference Swimmer of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
Groome put forth a valiant effort in SIU's 173.5-109.5 loss to Western Kentucky last weekend. She recorded two first place finishes, winning the 1000 free by more than 13 seconds at 10:09.63 in addition to the 500 free with a time of 4:59.38. She also finished third in the 200 fly (2:07.92).
The two victories bring Groome's individual win total this season to 13.
This is the seventh time in her career and the third time this year that Groome has won this award, having also been recognized Oct. 19 and Nov. 3 following strong performances against Missouri, Kentucky and Missouri State.
Evansville's Jenn Childers was named MVC Diver of the Week.
Groome and the Salukis will host Childers and the Purple Aces this Saturday at 10 a.m. at Dr. Edward J. Shea Natatorium for the final dual meet before the conference championships. Southern Illinois will be the home of the State Farm/MVC Women's Swimming and Diving Championships Feb. 17-19, followed by the Mid-American Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championships March 3-5.
