CARBONDALE, Ill. - The 2011 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Swimming and Diving Championship began Thursday morning with preliminaries in three events.
Missouri State, Illinois State, Southern Illinois, Northern Iowa and Evansville dove into head-to-head competition in the 500 free, 200 IM and 50 free. The top eight swimmers qualify to advance to the 'A' final, and swimmers 9-16 advance to compete in the 'B' final, scheduled to start at 6 p.m. tonight.
Last year's MVC Swimmer of the Year Kirsten Groome came out on top in the first event, taking the first seed in the 500 free with a time of 4:57.01. Jenn Kwok also qualified for the A final, finishing seventh at 5:01.27. Jill Weckbach will represent SIU in the B final.
In the 200 IM preliminary, Kristin Geppert finished sixth place overall to earn a spot in the A final, posting a new career-best time of 2:06.94. Jessica Anderson finished 14th and will compete in the B final.
In the last swimming prelim of the day, Luisa Silveira finished third in the 50 free with a career-best time of 24.01. Marcela Teixeira, Rachael Barry, Susan Minkel and Carly Dvorak all posted qualifying times to compete in the B final for Southern.
The one-meter diving preliminaries are now under way, with the finals session scheduled for tonight at 7:05 p.m. Finals for the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, as well as the 200 freestyle and 400 medley relays will begin at 6 p.m.
