CARBONDALE, Ill. - The State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Swimming and Diving Championships continued Friday morning with preliminary races in five more events.
Kirsten Groome was edged by Brianna Willoughby in the 400 IM, but will return tonight to compete for the title and the record she broke as a freshman at last year's championships. Jessica Anderson and Carly Schlupp both qualified for the B final in the same event.
Isabela Castro swam her way into the top-eight in the 100 butterfly, finishing seventh to earn a spot in tonight's A final, while Rachael Barry, Melissa Larocque and Shailey Brumley will have a chance to score points for SIU in the B final.
Jill Weckbach advances to the A final in the 200 freestyle after a fifth-place time in the preliminary, and Luisa Silveira will compete in the B final after finishing 10th overall.
Kristin Geppert set a new career-best time in the 100 breast preliminary, the event that she was crowned champion in last year. Marcela Teixeira followed right behind Geppert to finish second. Susan Minkel and Cayman Bone will represent Southern in the B final.
The 100 back marked the final swimming prelim of the morning, in which Carly Dvorak posted a qualifying time for the B final this evening.
Three-meter diving preliminaries are currently taking place, and tonight will be the three-meter finals for divers 9-16. The finals for the four swimming events as well as the 200 medley relay and the 800 freestyle relay will begin at 6 p.m.
