MARTIN, Tenn. - The Southern Illinois baseball team got just six hits and one run as the Salukis fell to UT Martin, 5-1, here Tuesday at Skyhawk Field.
SIU (2-2) also only gave up six hits in the game, but the Skyhawks (1-3) scored five runs off of those with some help from two early Saluki errors.
Interim head coach Ken Henderson came away from the game frustrated with the outcome.
"There are going to be days where we don't play well," Henderson said. "Today, we were bad on defense and particularly bad on offense. Our effort was good. We played hard and played with intensity, but we just didn't play well."
UT Martin pitcher Jarrell Rodgers (1-0) went 8.0 innings, giving up just four hits to pick up the win on the hill for the Skyhawks.
SIU senior Andrew Bever allowed just two hits in his six innings of work and had five strikeouts. However, three runs (two earned) came in to score on him and he was credited with his first loss of the season.
Left fielder Jordan Sivertsen and shortstop Jake Welch both went 2-for-4 on the day, accounting for four of Southern's six hits. Sivertsen hit his third double this year in his fourth game.
SIU's lone run came in the ninth inning, when a UT Martin fielding error allowed Brock Harding to score from third base. The run was set up by Brian Bajer's double to right-center.
The Skyhawks scored an unearned run in the first and two in the second. A second Saluki error in the second prolonged the inning, but both runs that came home were earned.
After the first two error-plagued innings, Bever took control and retired 12-straight batters until he gave way to the bullpen in the seventh.
UTM shortstop Cody Terry drove in the fourth run on a single in the seventh and Matt Haynes' single to left field in the eighth gave the Skyhawks their fifth run.
The Salukis stay on the road this weekend when they travel to Columbia, S.C. to face the defending national champion South Carolina Gamecocks.
