MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Southern Illinois began match play on Saturday for the 2011 spring men's tennis season with 6-0 sweep of Morehead State.
Leading the charge for the Salukis was freshman Adam Fabik, who won in straight sets 6-1, 6-1, against Morehead State's Justin Harlow.
"Adam was in complete command," said head coach Dann Nelson.
The rest of the SIU Men's Tennis squad in action were senior Falk De Beenhouwer, who defeated MSU's Bradley Bryan 6-4, 6-7 (2), 6-3; sophomore Brandon Florez, who beat David Clifford 0-6, 6-2, 6-2; and freshman Jorge Cavero, who bested Roger White in straight sets 6-3, 6-0.
Since the match was already won by this point, the remaining two matches were to eight games. These included freshman Carlos Do Val, who topped Nathan Martin 8-6, and sophomore Orhan Spahic, who won over Hugo Almonte 8-4. No doubles were played.
"I thought we played pretty good for our first dual match of the season," said Nelson. "This year we were able to pull away from them quickly and never look back."
The Salukis will be in action again next Friday, Feb. 11, in Clarksville, Tenn. at Austin Peay.
