ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Southern Illinois freshman Isabela Castro has been named Missouri Valley Conference Swimmer of the Week for her efforts against MVC foe Evansville last weekend.
Castro helped the Salukis to a 133-100 victory over the Purple Aces last Saturday. She swam her way to two first-place finishes, including her first time in the 200 IM this season when she posted a team-best 2:09.71. Her top time in the 100 fly of 57.64 was also a new personal and season-best.
In addition, Castro was also a member of the first-place 200 medley relay team.
This is the first time in her young career that Castro has earned this award, and the second straight week that a Saluki swimmer has been recognized with MVC Swimmer of the Week honors.
Castro and the rest of the Southern Illinois women's swimming and diving team is set to compete at the 2011 State Farm/MVC Championship next week, Feb. 17-19. The three-day event is hosted by SIU and will take place at Dr. Edward J. Shea Natatorium.
